Vision - making choices

'Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei'
Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain

This whakatauki is about aiming high for that which is truly of value. But life is never simple, and sometimes choices must be made. Will you compromise or stay true to your vision? And yet doesn't every vision carry a cost of some kind? This activity looks at the choices a boy is faced with in pursuing a goal he values.

Vision matters

A whole class activity

'Mighty oaks from little acorns grow'

Some say that the seeds of greatness lie within all of us. That all of us have the ability to make our world or the world of others better in some small or great way. So how can we be more intentional in growing these 'seed of greatness'? What role does vision play in our lives in achieving such results? Over the next few weeks we are going to be looking at the power of vision to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others. We will discover that vision, while a critical ingredient, requires other elements if it is to grow in our lives.

- have a read of 'Boy on a bike' by Bronwen Wall
- read the story about the building of the Brooklyn Bridge

Questions for discussion after reading 'Boy on a bike':

- What is the longest distance you have ridden your bike?
- What inspired Mac to ride his bike the length of the north island? What was his vision?
- How did Mac prepare to achieve his vision?

Questions for discussion after reading the story about building the Brooklyn Bridge:

- What words would you use to describe Washington?
- How do you think Washington got through this difficulties?

Final questions:

- what similarities and differences do you see between the two stories?
- Do you have a vision or idea of something you would like to do for yourself or others?
- What could you do NOW to start preparing?

Understanding Reading Year Level

Some teachers have asked how reading age relates to reading level (given by year) in Journal Surf.

We have provided the link for the PDF that explains the changes to the way instructional series texts are levelled. These changes were determined by the MOE and came into being in August 2011. However, the metadata that you see (look in the 'Print page' or 'Print all' list) in the column 'RYL' (Reading Year Level) is the same data that was in the old Journal Surf (just transferred over). So you can use this in the same way re - selection of text for a student or understanding a particular student's ability to manage texts at a certain level. Click here for the MOE PDF.
