Using Journal Surf

  • What’s new in Journal Surf?
    • Journal Surf has increased functionality and a simpler design
    • Even if you are not logged in you can search the News page which includes leadership stories, and Quick-link resources for teachers
    • Once logged in you have access to a faceted search with associated resources
    • You can also use the advanced search for broader or more fine-tuned searches
    • Extra fields have been added to enhance the pedagogical value of the search, while maintaining the simplicity of Journal Search
  • Basic search
    • You have the option of searching all content or narrowing your search in the main search bar
    • Once you have submitted your search you will see the results below the search bar
    • The results are immediately sorted by relevancy, but you can change this, to have the most recent published results at the top, by clicking the ‘Sort by’ drop down menu and selecting ‘date’
    • Up to 20 items are displayed on the first page and then paginated
    • Each search result will display any associated resources and you can see more information by clicking on ‘view details’ or the link in the associated resource box
    • To the left of the search is a faceted search which enables you to drill down to finer detail
    • If you click on a facet on the left it will act as a filter and only show the results in that facet
    • You can have more than one filter selected, and these can be released by crossing on the ‘x’ beside them at the top of the faceted search menu.
  • Advanced search
    • Click on the 'Advanced search' link at the bottom of the standard search box
    • Work through the drop down menus and select the filters you want to apply
    • Be aware that the more filters you chose the less likely you are to find results
    • Reading level and type only allow you to select one filter at a time as each item is allocated to only one filter subset i.e. Reading year 3 or 4, not both
    • If you chose a filter and press search (without entering a word in the search box) you will find all items in the catalogue tagged to that filter
  • Resource search
    • There are two kinds of resources in Journal Surf — those that are linked to particular items in Journal Surf, and those that link across a number of items
    • Those that are linked to individual items will show up in the basic or advanced search in the ‘Associated Resources’ box
    • Those that are across a number of items will come up as individual items in the search results
    • They can also be searched for by going through the Resources search (click on Resources link in top menu bar), or by selecting ‘resources’ in the basic search (i.e. this will mean you are not searching across all content)
  • Linked resources
    • In 2013 we asked teachers how they wanted us to improve JournalSurf
    • There was a consistent desire for on-line links where possible to support the physical resources
    • As such we have (where available) provided links from the Ministry of Education or other sites
    • Resources have the following icons:
      • E-book (i.e. resource in an online form)
      • Teacher Support Materials (TSM)
      • Media (i.e. audio or video)
      • Quick-links resource
      • Inquiry Unit Plan
      • Assessment materials
      • Website link
  • Using quicklink resources
    • Quick-links are designed to shortcut some of the work you do to search for journal resources.
    • We have tried to provide something that is a quick reference to school journal stories and articles to support some of your curriculum topics and themes as well as significant events such as Anzac day or the Commonwealth games.
    • It is designed to be not too long and easy to read.
    • We hope you find it is useful, current and relevant. We would love your feedback and suggestions for topics and themes you would like us to cover.
